Hours Worked Calculator
También en español: Calculadora de horas de trabajo →
Decimal hours are what payroll uses: minutes ÷ 60.
How the hours worked calculation works
Hours worked is end time minus start time
8:30 to 17:00 is 8 hours 30 minutes on the clock. If the end time is earlier than the start, the shift is counted as ending the next day.
Take off unpaid breaks
A 30-minute unpaid lunch turns 8 h 30 min into 8 hours worked. Paid rest breaks stay in.
Convert minutes to decimal hours
Payroll uses decimals: 7 h 45 min is 7.75 hours. Divide the minutes by 60.
Multiply by days and by the hourly rate
8 hours × 5 days is 40 hours. At $22 an hour that is $880 before tax.
Worked example. A shift from 8:30 to 17:00 with a 30-minute unpaid lunch is 8 hours. Five of those is 40 hours, and at $22 an hour that is $880 gross pay.
Hours Worked FAQ
How do I calculate how many hours I worked?
Subtract the start time from the end time, then take off any unpaid break. 8:30 to 17:00 minus 30 minutes is 8 hours.
How do I calculate hours worked with a lunch break?
Work out the time between clock-in and clock-out, then subtract the unpaid lunch. A 9-hour span with a 1-hour lunch is 8 hours worked.
How do I turn hours and minutes into decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 6 hours 20 minutes is 6 + 20/60 = 6.33 hours.
How many hours is 9 to 5?
8 hours on the clock. With a 30-minute unpaid lunch it is 7.5 hours worked, or 37.5 hours over a five-day week.
Is this the same as a work hours or shift calculator?
Yes. Enter one shift's start, end and unpaid break, and how many days you work it. For a week where the times change each day, use the time card calculator, which takes a different start and end for every day and works out overtime.
Does this handle night shifts?
Yes. A shift from 22:00 to 06:30 is counted across midnight as 8 hours 30 minutes before breaks.
