Short stays carry the full fee over fewer nights, so a high fee can make 1–2 night stays look expensive. Lower the share charged to guests and the calculator shows what to add per night instead.
How the Airbnb cleaning fee calculation works
Set your Airbnb cleaning fee from what each turnover really costs (cleaner, laundry and restock), grossed up for Airbnb's host service fee, and see what it adds per night of a stay.
Add up one turnover
A $90 cleaner, $25 of laundry and $15 of toiletries and coffee is $130 per checkout.
Gross it up for Airbnb's fee
Airbnb takes its host fee from the nightly price plus your fees. At the 15.5% single fee, a $153.85 cleaning fee leaves you $130.
Check it against your stay length
Over a 3-night stay the fee is $51.28 a night, 25.5% of a booking at $150 a night.
Move part into the nightly price if stays are short
Charging guests 50% of the cost lowers the fee to $76.92 and adds $25.64 a night to cover the rest.
Worked example. A $130 turnover (cleaner $90, laundry $25, restock $15) needs a $153.85 cleaning fee under Airbnb's 15.5% single host fee, or $134.02 under the 3% split fee. On a 3-night stay at $150 a night, the fee is $51.28 a night and 25.5% of the booking.
Airbnb Cleaning Fee FAQ
How much should I charge for an Airbnb cleaning fee?
Add up what one turnover costs you (cleaner, laundry, supplies), then divide by 1 minus your Airbnb host fee so the fee still covers the cost after Airbnb's cut. Compare the result with similar listings near you.
Does Airbnb take a fee from the cleaning fee?
Airbnb's Help Center says the host service fee is calculated from the nightly price plus any fees the host charges, so the cleaning fee counts. That's why the calculator grosses it up.
What is Airbnb's host service fee?
Under the single fee, the whole fee comes out of the host payout: 15.5% for most hosts, typically 14% to 16% for the rest, and 16% for listings in Brazil and Mexico. It is mandatory for most hosts, including those who use property management software. Under the split fee, which Airbnb is phasing out, most hosts pay 3% and guests pay a service fee of 14.1% to 16.5% of the booking subtotal. Check your own rate in your earnings.
Do guests see the cleaning fee in the listing price?
Yes. Airbnb's Help Center says the price shown when guests search and view listings includes any fees, so the cleaning fee raises the price guests compare. Depending on the location, taxes may only appear at checkout. A high fee therefore hurts most on short stays, where it is spread over few nights.
What is the average Airbnb cleaning fee?
Airbnb doesn't publish an average. Fees follow local cleaning rates, the size of the home and how much laundry each stay makes. Price your own turnover here, then compare the fee with similar listings near you.
Is the cleaning fee refunded if a guest cancels?
Airbnb returns the full cleaning fee if the guest cancels within the free cancellation period. After that, the cleaning fee is treated as part of the nightly price, and any refund follows your cancellation policy. Reservations booked before 21 Apr 2025 follow the older rule: the fee is returned in full if the guest cancels before check-in.
Should I charge a cleaning fee or raise my nightly price?
A cleaning fee covers each turnover exactly, but it makes short stays look expensive. Many hosts charge part of the cost as a fee and build the rest into the nightly price; set the share above to compare.
How do I price a cleaning fee for a short stay?
Airbnb lets hosts offer a lower short-stay cleaning fee for bookings of 1 or 2 nights. Set it from a lower share of the cost and put the rest in the nightly price.
