How the percent off & discount calculation works

  1. Turn the percent into a decimal

30% off is 0.30. Multiply it by the price to get the discount: $50 × 0.30 = $15.

  2. Subtract the discount from the price

    $50 − $15 = $35. Or multiply by what's left: $50 × 0.70 = $35.

  3. Apply a second discount to the new price

An extra 10% off $35 is $3.50, so you pay $31.50. That's 37% off in total, not 40%.

Worked example. A $50 item is 30% off. The discount is $15, so the sale price is $35.

Percent Off & Discount FAQ

How do I calculate percent off?

Multiply the price by the percent as a decimal, then subtract it. 30% off $50 is $50 × 0.30 = $15, so you pay $35.

How do I do 30 percent off on a calculator?

Type the price, multiply by 0.7 and press equals. $50 × 0.7 = $35. The 0.7 is what's left after removing 30%.

What is 20 percent off $40?

$32. The discount is $40 × 0.20 = $8.

What is 40 percent off $60?

$36. You save $24.

How do I find the discount percentage from two prices?

Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100. An $80 item on sale for $60 is $20 ÷ $80 = 25% off.

Is 20% off plus an extra 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. The second discount comes off the reduced price, so the total is 28% off. On $100 you pay $72, not $70.
