How the Square fee calculation works
Square's fee on a sale, in person, online, keyed in or by ACH, on the Free, Plus or Premium plan, and what gets deposited, or what to charge to receive an exact amount.
The rate depends on how the customer pays
On Square's Free plan, tapping, dipping or swiping costs 2.6% + 15¢. Online payments and card payments on invoices cost 3.3% + 30¢. Typing in a card number or charging a card on file costs 3.5% + 15¢. An ACH bank transfer on an invoice costs 1%, with a $1 minimum.
The fee is a percentage plus a fixed amount
A $100 in-person sale costs $2.60 + $0.15 = $2.75, so $97.25 is deposited. Square takes the fee from the full payment, including tax and tip.
Paid plans lower in-person and online rates
Square Plus ($49 a month per location) charges 2.5% + 15¢ in person and 2.9% + 30¢ online. Premium ($149 a month per location) charges 2.4% + 15¢ in person and 2.9% + 30¢ online. Keyed-in and card-on-file payments stay at 3.5% + 15¢ on every plan.
To receive an exact amount, divide by (1 − rate)
Add the fixed fee to the amount you want and divide by 1 minus the rate. To net $100 in person on Free: ($100 + $0.15) ÷ 0.974 = $102.82.
Worked example. A $100.00 in-person card sale on Square Free costs 2.6% ($2.60) plus $0.15, a $2.75 fee, and $97.25 is deposited. The same sale online costs $3.60, keyed in it costs $3.65, and as an ACH payment on an invoice it costs $1.00.

How much does Square charge per transaction?
On the Free plan, 2.6% + 15¢ in person, 3.3% + 30¢ online or by card on an invoice, and 3.5% + 15¢ for keyed or card-on-file payments. ACH bank transfers on invoices cost 1% with a $1 minimum, and Afterpay costs 6% + 30¢.
What are Square's fees on Plus and Premium?
Plus ($49 a month per location) charges 2.5% + 15¢ in person and 2.9% + 30¢ online. Premium ($149 a month per location) charges 2.4% + 15¢ in person and 2.9% + 30¢ online. Keyed and card-on-file payments cost 3.5% + 15¢ on every plan.
How much is the Square card reader fee?
Square charges no separate reader fee per sale. A tap, dip or swipe on a Square reader, or with Tap to Pay on a phone, costs 2.6% + 15¢ on the Free plan. A $50 sale costs $1.45.
How much are Square invoice fees?
A card payment on an invoice costs 3.3% + 30¢ on Free and 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus or Premium. An ACH bank transfer on an invoice costs 1% with a $1 minimum, capped at $10 on Plus and Premium. ACH payments deposited into Square Checking have no fee.
How much do I need to charge to receive $100 with Square?
$102.82 in person, $103.72 online and $103.78 keyed in, on Free-plan rates. Use "Find what to charge" for any amount.
Does Square charge its fee on tax and tips?
Yes. Square takes the processing fee from the total payment, including tax and tip, so enter the full amount the customer pays.
Does Square charge extra for international cards?
Yes. Cards issued in a country other than your Square account's country carry an extra 1.5%. A $100 in-person sale on Free then costs $4.25 instead of $2.75.
Why do keyed-in payments cost more?
Square prices manual entry and card on file at 3.5% + 15¢, above the 2.6% + 15¢ for a card that is present. When the customer is in front of you, tap or insert the card to pay the lower rate.
Does Square charge a monthly fee?
Square Free has no monthly fee; you pay only processing fees. Plus costs $49 and Premium $149 a month per location, with lower in-person rates. On Plus, the 0.1% lower in-person rate covers the $49 fee only above $49,000 a month in card-present sales.
Does Square return the fee on a refund?
No. When you refund a payment, Square keeps the original processing fee.
