Price per Square Foot Calculator
Price per sq ft is a starting point, not the whole answer: smaller homes and jobs usually cost more per sq ft, and location, condition and finishes change it. Compare like with like, measured the same way.
How the price per square foot calculation works
Divide the price by the square feet
A $425,000 home with 2,000 sq ft is $425,000 ÷ 2,000 = $212.50 per sq ft.
Do the same for the one you're comparing
A $389,000 home with 1,750 sq ft is $222.29 per sq ft: cheaper overall but 4.6% more per sq ft.
Price one at the other's rate
At A's $212.50, B's 1,750 sq ft would be $371,875, so B is asking $17,125 more than A's rate.
Use the same measurement
Compare finished living area with finished living area, and a quote's floor area with the same floor area. Mixing in garages or unfinished basements skews it.
Worked example. A $425,000 home with 2,000 sq ft is $212.50 per sq ft ($2,287.33 per square meter). A $389,000 home with 1,750 sq ft is $222.29 per sq ft, 4.6% more, even though it costs less. At A's rate, B would be $371,875.
Price per Square Foot FAQ
How do I calculate price per square foot?
Divide the total price by the square footage. A $300,000 home with 1,500 sq ft is $200 per sq ft.
How do I calculate cost per square foot for a construction or remodel quote?
Divide the full quote by the area of the work. To build a quote from materials, labor and markup instead, use the square footage calculator or the contractor bid calculator.
Why is a smaller home more per square foot?
Kitchens, bathrooms, the lot and fixed costs are spread over fewer square feet, so small homes and small jobs usually cost more per sq ft even when the total is lower.

Commercial rent is often quoted per square foot per year. Divide the yearly rent by the square feet, then divide by 12 for the monthly figure. $36,000 a year for 1,200 sq ft is $30 per sq ft a year, or $2.50 a month. Enter the yearly rent as the total price to get the yearly rate.

There is no single useful number: it changes a lot by city, neighborhood, age, size and condition, and it moves over time. Divide the price per sq ft by 0.0929, or multiply by about 10.764. $212.50 per sq ft is about $2,287 per square meter.
