How the granite countertop cost calculation works
Measure each run in inches
Length × depth for each straight run and the island. 120 × 25.5 in, 96 × 25.5 in and a 72 × 36 in island add up to 8,100 sq in, or 56.25 sq ft.
Add the backsplash
216 in of wall at 4 in high is 864 sq in, or 6 sq ft, for 62.25 sq ft in total.
Multiply by your price per sq ft
At an example $60 per sq ft, the stone with fabrication costs $3,735.
Add edges, cutouts, tear-out and installation
22 ft of edge upgrade at $15 is $330, one sink and two other cutouts are $230, tear-out $200 and installation at $10 per sq ft $622.50. The total is $5,117.50.
Worked example. Two counter runs (120 × 25.5 in and 96 × 25.5 in), a 72 × 36 in island and a 4 in backsplash along 216 in of wall make 62.25 sq ft. At an example $60 per sq ft the countertop costs $3,735. Adding $330 for edge upgrades, $230 for cutouts, $200 for tear-out and $622.50 for installation gives $5,117.50, or $82.21 per sq ft all-in. Granite Countertop Cost FAQ
How much do granite countertops cost?
There is no official national price; it depends on the stone, the slab count, the edge profile, cutouts and local labor. With this page's example prices, a kitchen with 62.25 sq ft of countertop and backsplash comes to $5,117.50. Enter a fabricator's prices to get your number.
How do I work out granite countertop cost per square foot?
Divide the total by the square feet of countertop and backsplash. In the example, $5,117.50 ÷ 62.25 sq ft is $82.21 per sq ft all-in, against the $60 per sq ft price of the stone itself.
How do I calculate countertop square footage?
Multiply the length by the depth of each run in inches, add them up and divide by 144. A 120 × 25.5 in run is 3,060 sq in, or 21.25 sq ft. Measure an L-shape as two rectangles so the corner is counted once.
How much does granite countertop installation cost?
Ask the fabricator whether installation is included in the price per sq ft. If it is separate, enter it per sq ft; the example uses $10, which adds $622.50 to a 62.25 sq ft job. Tear-out of the old tops and plumbing reconnection may be extra.
Should I include the backsplash in the square footage?
Only for a stone backsplash cut from the same slab. Enter its length and height; for a tile backsplash, set the length to 0 and price the tile separately.
What do sink and faucet cutouts cost?
Fabricators usually list them per cutout. Enter the count and the price from your quote, and ask whether an undermount sink, which needs a polished cutout edge, is priced differently from a drop-in sink.
Does this work for quartz or marble?
Yes. The square footage and the add-ons work the same way; enter the price per sq ft for the material you chose.
