    How to make an invoice

    1. Add your business and the customer

Your name, address and contact details are remembered on this device, so next time you only fill in the customer.

    2. List the work

One line for each product or service, with quantity and rate. The amount for each line and the subtotal update as you type. Up to 10 lines fit on the one-page PDF.

    3. Add tax, a deposit and terms

Tick Taxable on lines that carry sales tax and enter your rate. Enter a deposit already paid to show the balance due. Pick Net 15, Net 30 or another term and the due date is filled in.

    4. Download and send

The PDF is ready to email or print. The next invoice starts with the next number, and your details are already filled in.

    Invoice generator FAQ

Is this invoice generator really free?

Yes. There's no sign-up, no watermark on the PDF and no limit on how many invoices you make. The site is paid for by ads.

    What should an invoice include?

Your business name and contact details, the customer's name and address, a unique invoice number, the issue date and due date, a line for each product or service with quantity and rate, any sales tax, the total, payments already made, the balance due, and how to pay.

Is this an invoice template or an invoice maker?

Both. It's a simple invoice template you fill in on the page, and it does the maths like an invoice maker: line amounts, subtotal, sales tax, deposit, balance due and the due date. You get a PDF, so there's no Word or Excel file to edit.

Can I use it as a contractor or freelance invoice?

Yes. Put labor and materials on separate lines, or bill hours × your hourly rate for freelance work. Add a deposit you already took to show the balance due, and your payment terms in the notes.

    Where is my invoice saved?

Only in this browser on this device, so it's still here if you reload. Nothing is sent to our servers. Keep the downloaded PDF for your records, because clearing your browser data removes the draft.

How should I number my invoices?

Use a unique number that goes up by one each time, such as 1001, 1002, 1003, or one with a prefix like INV-0042. After you download an invoice, the next one starts with the next number.

Should I charge sales tax on an invoice?

Only on items that are taxable in your state; many states don't tax most services. Tick Taxable on those lines and enter your combined state and local rate. The sales tax calculator by state shows each state's rate.

What do Net 15 and Net 30 mean?

The customer has 15 or 30 days from the invoice date to pay. Due on receipt means payment is expected when the customer gets the invoice. The due date is worked out for you.

Can I charge a late fee?

If your agreement or state rules allow it, add your late fee terms in the notes before the job starts. The late payment interest calculator works out the amount.
