How the kitchen remodel cost calculation works

  1. Measure the cabinet run, counters, backsplash and floor

A 10 × 15 ft kitchen might have 25 linear ft of cabinets, 40 sq ft of countertop, 30 sq ft of backsplash and 150 sq ft of floor.

  2. Price the big items by size

25 ft of cabinets at $250 is $6,250; 40 sq ft of counters at $60 is $2,400; backsplash at $15 is $450; flooring at $5 is $750.

  3. Add appliances, fixtures and the rest

Appliances, sink, lighting, plumbing and electrical parts, paint, demolition and permit add $7,600, for $17,450. A 10% contingency makes it $19,195.

  4. Add labor and markup

160 hours at $60 is $9,600. A 20% markup on the $28,795 cost gives a price of $34,554, or $230.36 per sq ft of floor.

Worked example. A 10 × 15 ft kitchen with 25 linear ft of cabinets at $250, 40 sq ft of countertop at $60, 30 sq ft of backsplash at $15, 150 sq ft of flooring at $5, $4,000 of appliances and $3,600 of fixtures, lighting, parts, paint, demolition and permit comes to $17,450, or $19,195 with a 10% contingency. With 160 hours of labor at $60 and a 20% markup the price is $34,554, $230.36 per sq ft.

Kitchen Remodel Cost FAQ

How much does a kitchen remodel cost?

It depends most on the cabinets, countertops and appliances you choose, the size of the kitchen and whether walls, plumbing or wiring move. Enter your measurements and the prices of the products you picked; the calculator adds labor, a contingency and markup.

What's the most expensive part of a kitchen remodel?

In the example it is labor ($9,600), then cabinets ($6,250), appliances ($4,000) and countertops ($2,400). Your order depends on the products you pick. The calculator lists every line, so you can see where a cheaper choice saves the most.

How much does a small kitchen remodel cost?

Less cabinet run and counter area, but appliances, the sink, permit and much of the labor don't shrink with the room. A 10 × 10 ft kitchen with 18 linear ft of cabinets, 30 sq ft of countertop, 20 sq ft of backsplash and 120 hours of labor, all other prices as in the example, comes to $28,044, or $280.44 per sq ft against $230.36 for the 150 sq ft kitchen. Enter your own sizes to see both.

How do I measure linear feet of cabinets?

Measure along the wall where the base cabinets sit, corner to end, and add the island length. Price the upper cabinets over the same run into the same per-foot figure, or add them as a separate allowance.

How do I work out kitchen cabinet cost per linear foot?

Divide the cabinet quote by the length of the run. A $6,250 quote for 25 linear ft is $250 per linear ft, the calculator's starting value. Cabinet refacing can be entered the same way: put the refacing quote per linear ft in the cabinet line.

How do I work out kitchen remodel cost per square foot?

Divide the full price by the floor area. In the example $34,554 ÷ 150 sq ft = $230.36 per sq ft. The calculator shows this under the result.

How long does a kitchen remodel take?

The labor hours give the working time: 160 hours is 4 weeks for one person at 40 hours a week, or 2 weeks for two. Add waiting time for cabinet delivery, countertop templating and fabrication, and permit inspections; ask your suppliers and building department for their lead times.

How much contingency should I add to a kitchen remodel?

The calculator starts at 10%. Raise it for older homes or when walls, plumbing or wiring will be opened, where hidden problems are more likely. It's added to materials here.

Can I turn this into a quote?

Yes. Use the quote panel below the result to download a customer-ready PDF quote, then turn it into an invoice when the job is done.
