How the business days calculation works

  1. Count every day in the range

    From Wednesday, October 14 to Friday, November 13, 2026 is 31 days when both dates are counted.

  2. Take out Saturdays and Sundays

    That range has 8 weekend days, leaving 23 weekdays.

  3. Take out federal holidays that fall on weekdays

    Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, 2026, is in the range, so there are 22 business days.

  4. Holidays on a weekend move to a weekday

    A fixed-date holiday on Saturday is observed on the Friday before; on Sunday, the Monday after. Christmas 2027 is a Saturday, so it is observed Friday, December 24.

  5. To add business days, start counting the next day

    10 business days after Wednesday, October 14, 2026 is Wednesday, October 28.

Worked example. From October 14 to November 13, 2026 there are 31 calendar days, 8 weekend days and 1 federal holiday (Veterans Day), which leaves 22 business days.

How many business days are between two dates?

Count the days from start to end, take out Saturdays and Sundays, then take out any public holidays on weekdays. This calculator counts both the start and end date.

What are the US federal holidays?

New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

What date is 30 business days from today?

Choose "Add business days to a date", enter today as the start date and 30 as the number of days. 30 business days is usually about six calendar weeks.

Are banks closed on all federal holidays?

Most banks follow the Federal Reserve schedule, which closes on federal holidays. It does not shift Saturday holidays to Friday, so check the Fed calendar for those dates.

How do I count business days in Excel?

Use =NETWORKDAYS(start, end, holidays). It counts both dates, like this calculator. =WORKDAY(start, days, holidays) adds business days.
