How the crochet pricing calculation works

  1. Add up the materials

In the example, 3 skeins at $7 (use your own yarn price) is $21, plus $4 of stuffing and safety eyes: $25.

  2. Pay yourself for the hours

8 hours at an example rate of $15 an hour is $120. Crochet takes time, so this is usually the biggest part of the price.

  3. Add packaging and overhead

$3 brings the cost to $148.

  4. Add your markup

A 10% markup gives $162.80: $120 for your time plus $14.80 of profit.

Worked example. A crochet piece using 3 skeins at $7 and $4 of other materials, taking 8 hours at $15 an hour with $3 of packaging, costs $148 to make. With a 10% markup, charge $162.80.

Crochet Pricing FAQ

How much should I charge for crochet?

Add yarn and materials, your hours at an hourly rate, packaging and overhead, then a markup. The hours are usually the biggest part; time your work so the price covers it.

Why are crochet blankets so expensive?

They take many hours. A blanket that takes 30 hours, at the example rate of $15 an hour, is $450 of time before any yarn. Time your own work and use your own rate.

Should I charge for my time or just materials × 3?

Charging for time is fairer for long projects: a materials-only formula underprices pieces that take many hours with cheap yarn. The calculator includes both.

How do I price a crochet commission?

Estimate the hours and yarn for the request, add a markup and consider a deposit for the yarn. Custom colors or patterns can take longer; add the hours.

How do Etsy fees change my crochet price?

For a US shop, Etsy's fee pages list a 6.5% transaction fee on the price plus shipping, 3% + $0.25 payment processing on the order total, and $0.20 per listing. Enter 9.5% to cover the two percentages. On the $162.80 example that takes $15.47, more than the 10% markup, so you lose $0.67. A 22% markup gives $180.56 and $15.41 profit after those fees. Use the Etsy fee calculator for the fixed fees and shipping.

What is the formula for pricing crochet?

Price = (yarn + other materials + hours × hourly rate + packaging and overhead) × (1 + markup). If you sell on a marketplace, check that the price still leaves a profit after its fees.

How much should I charge per hour for crochet?

Pick the rate you want to earn for your time; the calculator does not assume one. The hourly rate calculator can work out a rate from the income you want and the hours you can sell.
