Jewelry Pricing Calculator
- Materials
- Your time
- Overhead
- Profit
Wholesale is what a shop pays you; retail is what you charge when you sell directly. If the retail price seems high for your market, look at your time and materials before cutting the multipliers.
How the jewelry pricing calculation works
Add up the materials
$6 of beads or metal and $1.50 of findings: $7.50.
Pay yourself for the time
45 minutes at $25 an hour is $18.75. Add $1.50 of packaging for a cost of $27.75.
Set the wholesale price
At a 2× multiplier, wholesale is $55.50: what a boutique pays you.
Set the retail price
At 2× again, retail is $111. Selling direct, that leaves $83.25 of profit before fees.
Worked example. A piece with $6 of beads or metal, $1.50 of findings, 45 minutes of work at $25 an hour and $1.50 of packaging costs $27.75. With 2× multipliers, wholesale is $55.50 and retail $111.
Jewelry Pricing FAQ
How do I price handmade jewelry?
Add materials, findings, your time at an hourly rate and packaging to get the cost. Multiply for wholesale, then for retail, and compare with similar pieces in your market.
What is the jewelry pricing formula?
Cost = materials + labor + overhead; wholesale = cost × a multiplier; retail = wholesale × a multiplier. Set the multipliers yourself; the calculator shows the result of each.
How do I price jewelry with gold, silver or gemstones?
Expensive materials can make a doubled price uncompetitive. Many makers use a lower multiplier when materials are most of the cost; try a lower wholesale multiplier and check what's left for profit.
How do I work out the metal cost of gold or silver jewelry?
Weigh the metal in grams and multiply by its purity and by the price of fine metal per gram. Karat is measured in 24ths, so 14 karat is 14/24, or 58.3% gold, and sterling silver must be at least 92.5% silver. Metal is quoted per troy ounce, which is 31.10348 grams. Example with an assumed price, not today's: if fine gold costs $100 a gram (about $3,110 a troy ounce), 5 grams of 14 karat gold contain $291.67 of gold. Use your supplier's current price per gram and enter the result as the metal cost.
What is keystone pricing in jewelry?
Keystone means doubling: the retail price is twice the wholesale price. The 2× multipliers in this calculator are an example starting point, not a rule. Change them to match your costs and your market.
How do I price permanent jewelry?
Permanent jewelry is usually sold direct, so set the wholesale multiplier to 1. Enter the chain you use for one piece plus the jump ring as the materials, and the minutes to size and weld it. With the default costs and a 2.5× retail multiplier, the price is $69.38 and the profit $41.63.
Can I call my jewelry handmade?
In the US, the FTC Jewelry Guides say "handmade" should only describe pieces shaped, formed and finished from raw materials (sheet, wire, metal clay, casting grain) by hand and manually controlled methods. For pieces assembled from bought, ready-made parts, describe the hand work accurately instead, for example "hand-assembled".
Should I include my time?
Yes. Your time is a real cost, and including it means even wholesale orders pay you for the work.
How do Etsy fees affect jewelry prices?
Etsy US charges a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing of 3% + $0.25. On a $111 piece with no shipping, that is about $11.00 in fees. Entering 10% in the fees field gives $11.10, close to that; use the Etsy fee calculator for exact figures.
