How the Shopify fee & profit calculation works

Shopify's payment fees, any third-party transaction fee and your plan cost per order, with the profit margin left on each sale. US rates from shopify.com/pricing, checked 20 Oct 2026.

  1. Shopify Payments charges a card rate per order

On the Basic plan, online cards cost 2.9% + $0.30. A $40 order pays $1.46. Higher plans pay a lower percentage.

  2. Other payment providers add a Shopify fee

If a third-party provider takes the payment, Shopify adds a transaction fee on top of that provider's fee: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, charged on the order including tax and shipping. PayPal is exempt when Shopify Payments is your main provider.

  3. Spread the plan price across your orders

A $39 monthly plan over 100 orders costs $0.39 per order. Fewer orders make each one carry more of it.

  4. Margin is profit divided by the order total

Subtract product cost, shipping, fees, plan share and ads from what the customer pays, then divide by the order total.

Worked example. A $40.00 order on Basic with Shopify Payments pays 2.9% + $0.30, or $1.46. With a $15.00 product cost, $5.00 shipping and a $39 plan spread over 100 orders ($0.39), profit is $18.15 per order, a 45.4% margin. Below $21.31 the product loses money.

It depends on the product, so there is no single target. Use this calculator with your own costs, and include ad spend per order: paid ads often take a large share of the margin left after product, shipping and fees.
