How the plumber job price calculation works

  1. Count all the time, including the drive

2 hours on the job plus 30 minutes to get there and set up is 2.5 hours. At $95 an hour that's $237.50 of labor.

  2. Add parts with your markup

$60 of parts with a 30% markup is $78. The markup pays for buying, picking up and standing behind the parts.

  3. Add overhead and profit

A $35 share of van, insurance and advertising costs brings the cost to $350.50. 15% profit makes it $403.08.

  4. Quote one flat price

Round to $405 if you like. Customers compare flat prices, and you keep the upside when a job goes faster.

Worked example. A 2-hour toilet replacement with 30 minutes of driving, at $95 an hour with $60 of parts marked up 30% and a $35 overhead share, costs $350.50. With 15% profit the price to quote is $403.08, and you earn $123.23 per hour all in.

Plumber Job Price FAQ

How much do plumbers charge per hour?

There is no official figure for what plumbers bill; it varies by region, license level and emergency hours. Use your own target rate here, then compare the flat price with what local plumbers quote for the same job.

What is a plumber's hourly rate compared with plumber pay?

They are different numbers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median wage of employed plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters at $30.67 an hour (May 2025). That is pay, not a billing rate. A rate you bill customers must also cover drive time, overhead and profit, which is why the calculator adds them on top.

How much should I charge to install a toilet?

Add your hours on the job and driving at your hourly rate, the wax ring, supply line and bolts with your markup, a share of overhead and profit. With the default inputs (2 hours plus 30 minutes of driving at $95, $60 of parts marked up 30%, $35 overhead, 15% profit) the flat price is $403.08. Leave out the toilet itself if the customer buys it.

Should plumbers charge flat rate or hourly?

Many residential plumbers quote flat rates because customers prefer a known price. Work the flat rate out from your hours, as here, so it still covers your time.

How much should I mark up plumbing parts?

Enough to cover ordering, pickup, returns and warranty callbacks. Enter your markup; the calculator shows the parts profit separately.

Should I charge a trip fee?

Some plumbers charge a service call fee, others build driving into the price. Both work; pick one and say it clearly on your quote. Adding a $49 trip fee to the default job raises the quote from $403.08 to $452.08.

What license does a plumber need in California?

California's Contractors State License Board (CSLB) licenses plumbing contractors under the C-36 Plumbing classification. It covers water supply, waste disposal, gas piping and appliances, and water heaters. Check CSLB for exam and experience rules before you bid; other states have their own boards.
